Kohab, an intergenerational co-living venture bringing older and younger adults together to live side-by-side in mutual support
EP72: When I met Justin Shee a couple of years ago he had a very good idea. It wasn't a unique idea per se, but his approach and the reasons behind it were. That idea was Kohab, an intergenerational co-living venture bringing older and younger adults together to live side-by-side in mutual support. The idea was influenced by Justin's background as a musician and the way that music is one tool that can be harnessed by all generations to bring joy, friendships, and combat loneliness.
In this podcast we talk about:
- Kohab, what it does and where the idea came about;
- Their approach to conceiving of and designing around the needs of their customer;
- Loneliness as a topic and how it affects both older and younger people;
- The mutual benefits of older and younger people having strong relationships;
- The general movement towards social finance / ESG.
About Justin Shee:
Justin is the founder of The Kohab, an intergenerational co-living venture providing a new way for people across the ages to live together and support each other, just like we all used to. They develop and operate schemes that are designed around the needs of the older population, but always provide a proportion of the units for younger adults to live in at affordable rents in return for being active participants in the community. Based on successful European models, it has the potential to solve some of the big issues we face in society around isolation, loneliness, and age segregation.
Justin founded the company in response to observing that many older people have an aversion to the age ghettos which retirement living creates, and a discontent with how we 'deal with older people' in society, born out of having grown up living with his grandfather
